The Old Woman and the Doctor – Ezop Masalı

An old woman had a serious problem with her eyes. She could be totally blind. So, she went to a doctor and made an agreement with him. According to the agreement, she would pay the doctor if he cured her, but if he failed, she would pay nothing. The agreement was made in the presence of witnesses. And the treatment began.

From time to time the doctor went to her house and gave her some medicine. However, each time he visited her, he secretly took away something from the house. In the end, the treatment was complete and the woman was cured. But there was nothing in the house (The doctor had taken away everything). When the woman saw that, she refused to pay the doctor.

Then the doctor sued her for the payment of her debt. At the court, the woman said, “It is true that we made and agreement, and according to the agreement I would pay the doctor nothing if he failed to cure me. Now he says he cured me. But I say I am blinder, and I can prove it. When my eyes were bad, I could see well enough to know that there was some furniture and other things in my house. However, now, after the treatment, I can’t see anything at home”.
