He is carrying heavy chains, which is a part of his punishment because he robbed the widows and swindled the poor when he was alive. He steps on a cane and falls down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M (Marley): Gosh. It is slippery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scrooge is afraid of him because he doesn\u2019t understand that it is Marley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M: Scrooge, don\u2019t you recognize me? I was your partner, Jacob Marley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>S: Marley, it is you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M: Remember when I was alive, I robbed the widows and swindled the poor?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>S: Yes, and all in the same day. You had class, Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a moment, Jacob Marley feels proud. But then he understands that it is a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M: No! I was wrong, and so as punishment, I have to carry these heavy chains for ever!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Scrooge is not listening to Marley. He is interested in a moneybox that is linked to Jacob\u2019s chains. Then Marley shouts at him:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M: And the same thing will happen to you, Scrooge!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means Scrooge will have the same punishment as Jacob. He will carry chains because he is a bad man; he loves money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scrooge is afraid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>S: No it can&#8217;t! It mustn&#8217;t! Help me, Jacob!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M: Tonight, You will be visited by three spirits (three spirits will visit you). Listen to them. Do what they say. Or your chains will be heavier than mine (=my chains)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then Jacob leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M: Farewell Scrooge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Jacob is gone, Scrooge searches the room with a candle in his hand. His looks into the chimney and then under the table, looking for spirits. When he finds none, he is angry. Now he doesn&#8217;t believe in the spirits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>S: Spirits? Humbug!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And he goes to bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 2 o&#8217;clock a.m., the first spirit appears. It is a little man. It is the Ghost (=spirit) of Christmas Past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacob Marley is in the room.
